I was awarded a BACR/AstraZeneca Student Travel Award in 2023, which enabled me to attend and present my PhD work at the International Symposium on Late Complications after Childhood Cancer (ISLCCC) in in Atlanta (US).
As a final year PhD student at Newcastle University, opportunities for in-person meetings, particularly international, have been hindered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and ISLCCC offered my first and final opportunity to present my findings at the major international conference for the field, before completing my PhD.
An estimated 80% of children survive their cancer, however many are often left with debilitating, late-occurring side-effects from their treatment. My PhD was focused on understanding the development of late-effects; I developed an in vivo model that recapitulates the developmental stage, radiation modality and late-effect profile seen in paediatric brain tumour survivors.
Receiving the BACR/AstraZeneca Student Travel Award enabled me to present the findings of my work, as well as exchange ideas and build connections with potential collaborators within the childhood cancer survivorship community. Without the support of the BACR, attendance at ISLCCC would not have been possible, and I am very grateful for receiving the travel award.
